Greening of a ground-floor courtyard
- Objectives : Creating an intimate green cocoon in a Mediterranean style
This project involved transforming a closed, austere courtyard into a lush green cocoon inspired by Mediterranean landscapes. The client, passionate about Greece, wanted an intimate and welcoming space while respecting the constraints of the shared ownership building. Thanks to creative solutions such as a plant curtain, the design combines Mediterranean aesthetics with everyday functionality.
Context and Objectives
The landscaping of a closed courtyard was conceived for a client passionate about Greece, its architecture and its iconic colours. The main challenge was to ensure privacy from neighbours while respecting the building's restrictions, which prohibited rigid privacy screens. The objective was to create an intimate, warm and green space evoking a Mediterranean atmosphere, while integrating practical elements for pleasant everyday use.
Plant Curtain and Mediterranean Facade
To resolve the overlooking issue, a cable system was installed, allowing climbing plants to form a plant curtain. This device ensures visual privacy while adding a natural and aesthetic touch.
The facade was restored and repainted in Greek-inspired tones, bringing a Mediterranean ambiance faithful to the client's memories and tastes.
Functional Spaces and Greening
The first part of the courtyard was arranged to incorporate storage, a bicycle shelter, and other technical areas, ensuring efficient and discreet organisation.
A sandpit was created for the children, convertible into a planting area over time. This shaded space was planted with sedums — resistant, low-maintenance plants — in line with the client's wish to keep upkeep minimal.
Intimate Rest Area
In the most private part of the courtyard, a relaxation area was created with built-in seating wrapped in a green cocoon. The walls, dressed with trellises entwined with star jasmines, reinforce the presence of nature in this originally very mineral environment.
Convivial Atmosphere and Dining Zone
A string of lights was installed to add a warm and convivial touch, creating a “guinguette” atmosphere perfect for evenings with friends or family. A dining area was arranged alongside a vertical kitchen garden equipped with an automatic irrigation system, keeping the garden self-sufficient during the client's extended absences.
Conclusion
This project transformed a once cold and austere courtyard into a genuine green haven, warm and welcoming, in the heart of the city. Thanks to ingenious solutions combining practicality and aesthetics, the client can now enjoy an intimate setting evoking the gentleness and conviviality of Mediterranean landscapes.
